Description
A comforting and filling breakfast casserole featuring savory sausage, hearty hash browns, and melted cheese, perfect for family gatherings and leisurely mornings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 30 ounces frozen hash browns, thawed
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons butter or oil for greasing
- Optional: bell peppers, green onions, mushrooms, or spinach
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare a 9-by-13-inch baking dish by lightly greasing it.
- Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Add onion during the last few minutes if desired.
- Mix the thawed hash browns, cooked sausage, half of the cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and optional vegetables in a large bowl.
- Whisk the eggs and milk together in a separate bowl until smooth.
- Combine the egg mixture with the potato mixture and stir until evenly distributed. Pour into the prepared baking dish and top with remaining cheese.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until the center is set and top is golden. Cover with foil if cheese browns too quickly.
- Rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a lighter version, use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Add diced bell peppers or leafy greens for added nutrition and color.
