- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil leaves
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Once shimmering, add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until translucent.
- Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute, allowing the wonderful aroma to fill your kitchen.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Add oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer gently for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If using fresh basil, stir it in just before serving.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes while cooking. Use ripe, in-season tomatoes for the best flavor.
