Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups (280 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 3/4 cup (170 g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (165 g) packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped toasted nuts (pecans or walnuts)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  3. Add the melted butter with the granulated and brown sugars until smooth.
  4. Incorporate the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla and whisk until glossy.
  5. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined.
  6. Add in the chocolate chips and optional nuts.
  7. Use a large cookie scoop to portion dough onto the baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes until edges are golden brown.
  9. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

Chill the dough for 30 minutes for deeper flavor and controlled spread. Can substitute half the butter with mashed banana or unsweetened applesauce for a healthier option.
