  • 3/4 cup (170 g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 cup (200 g) packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg yolk, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/22 cups semisweet chocolate chips or chopped bittersweet chocolate
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped toasted pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  3. Whisk melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth in a large bowl.
  4. Add the egg, extra egg yolk, and vanilla to the butter mixture; whisk until combined.
  5. Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  6. Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts if using.
  7. Chill the dough for 30–60 minutes for best results.
  8. Scoop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the prepared sheets.
  9. Bake for 9–12 minutes, until edges are golden.
  10. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

Chilling the dough results in thicker, chewier cookies. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
