- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup boiling water
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the frosting:
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 15×10-inch sheet pan.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until evenly blended.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add boiling water and cocoa powder; stir until smooth.
- Remove from heat and add the cocoa mixture to the flour mixture. Stir to combine.
- Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined, lumps are fine.
- Pour the batter into the prepared sheet pan, smoothing it out evenly. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Prepare the frosting by melting butter in a saucepan. Stir in cocoa powder, gradually whisk in powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Add vanilla extract last.
- Once the cake is cooled slightly, pour the frosting on top and spread it over the entire surface.
Notes
Add nuts, fresh fruits, or sprinkles for variation. For a healthier version, substitute with whole wheat flour and coconut sugar.
