  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 7 tablespoons dark unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups very hot water
  • Vanilla ice cream (for topping)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8×8-inch glass baking dish.
  • Whisk together flour, sugar, and cocoa powder in a large bowl. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  • Spread the batter evenly in the prepared dish.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together remaining sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over batter.
  • Pour hot water evenly over the mixture—do not stir.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, until top is set and edges are golden.
  • Let sit for 15-20 minutes, then serve with vanilla ice cream.
