Description
Transform simple ingredients into rich, sweet, and savory caramelized onions that elevate any dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large yellow onions (or sweet onions for a milder flavor)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or olive oil for a healthier option)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- A pinch of salt
- A pinch of sugar (optional)
- Fresh herbs (such as thyme or rosemary, optional)
Instructions
- Peel and slice the onions thinly, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Melt the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and stir well to coat in fats.
- Sprinkle a pinch of salt over the onions.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and cook slowly, stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of sugar after about 10 minutes, if desired.
- Continue cooking for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring every 5-10 minutes, until the onions are golden brown.
- Remove from heat and toss in fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
Patience is key; slow cooking leads to richer flavors. Store leftovers in an airtight container up to a week or freeze for up to 3 months.
