A comforting family recipe that combines seasoned ground meat and tender cabbage baked in savory tomato sauce.


Ingredients

  • 1 medium green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 cup uncooked rice
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut out the core; blanch leaves in boiling water for 3–4 minutes.
  3. In a skillet, sauté chopped onions in olive oil until translucent, about 5 minutes; add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the ground beef or turkey to the skillet and cook until browned; season with paprika, salt, and pepper.
  5. Stir in uncooked rice and half the tomato sauce; simmer for about 5 minutes.
  6. Spread a layer of remaining tomato sauce in a baking dish; fill cabbage leaves with meat mixture, roll up, and place seam-side down in the dish.
  7. Pour remaining tomato sauce over the rolls and sprinkle cheese on top if using.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes; remove foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.
  9. Let sit for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, substitute meat with lentils or mixed veggies. Fresh herbs like parsley or dill can be added before serving for extra flavor.
